Harwigs/L'Apogee: Restaurant Review

At Harwigs/L'Apogee, it's all about the presentation.
Of the three dishes sampled, each was as pleasing to look at as it was to eat, and included fresh flower garnishes that looked as if they could have been hand-picked while on a hike.
When my husband and I sat for dinner, our water glasses were immediately filled, and we were given a small plate of olives to munch on while we contemplated the extensive wine list. Wine is a theme at Harwigs, with much of the decor being wine-inspired. Wine labels adorn much of the walls, and wine boxes hang on another wall. The effect is entirely charming, not tacky.
We started our meal with two small plates, which are smaller sizes and less expensive than the regular appetizers. The Mediterranean ceviche of rock shrimp ($8) was enough to share and was perfectly flavored with olive oil, carrot and cucumber. The Black Angus beef dim sum and chicken potstickers ($6) came out with two sauces, and we could not decide which we liked more.
As for the entree, we opted to share the Sika venison, which came with diver scallops, spring vegetable herb salad and fresh cherries ($34). The sea scallops were well-seasoned and tasty but had a little bit of grit to them. The venison was flavorful, and the tomatoes and cherries were sweet and tart - a nice accompaniment to the meat.
The atmosphere at Harwigs was also enjoyable. Low music played in the background, and the restaurant was fairly empty, which would lend itself well to a romantic date or quiet, family dinner.
My one complaint about the restaurant was that the service was fairly slow. The time to get our food was lengthy, especially considering that there were few occupied tables in the restaurant.
Overall, however, I would recommend Harwigs to anyone looking for a romantic dinner just be prepared to spend some time dining.
Harwigs is open daily for dinner from 5 to 11 p.m., with the bar open late until 1:30 a.m. Entrees range from $26 to $42, and appetizers from $11 to $19. Harwigs also has an extensive wine list.
