Holidays in the Rockies enters 25th year with Saturday event

If you go

What: Holidays in the Rockies

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday

Where: Christian Heritage School, 27285 Brandon Circle

Cost: Free to attend, donations to the Arts Council will be taken at the entrance

— When Holidays in the Rockies began 25 years ago, there was no winter artisan market in Steamboat Springs.

“We were the first of our kind,” said Rachel Radetsky, program manager of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. “Now, it is the biggest artisan market in the valley. We started the event to create another great venue for artisans of the valley to display their work.”

At Christian Heritage School on Saturday, 50 artisans from across the valley will set up booths to display and sell unique holiday gifts. Local artisans participating in the event include Dean Martin, Leo Atkinson and Sue Gallion.

Fine art and photography will be available for purchase, as well as handmade jewelry, homemade children’s clothing, purses, scarves, hats and handmade holiday decorations. Some booths will feature wooden crafts such as children’s toys, and others will display artwork and water features made out of stone. There also will be homemade soaps and lotions. Edible items, always popular at the event, include homemade coffee, sauces and smoked cheeses.

“Sue Gallion makes very unique winter hats that usually sell out,” Radetsky said. “There is always a wide variety of special holiday gifts, no matter what you are looking for.”

Visitors will find more than holiday gifts at the market. The Jewels will perform at 11 a.m., and the Yampa Valley Boys perform at 1 p.m.

Rachel Green, of Rachel’s BBQ, will sell lunch throughout the day until the market closes at 4 p.m. Local florists also have donated holiday wreaths that will be available through a raffle held at 3 p.m. Guests can buy their ticket for $1 for a chance to win a wreath of their choice. Wreaths are donated by One Fine Day, Alpine Floral, City Market, Tall Tulips and Steamboat Arts & Crafts Gym.

There is no cost to attend the event, but donations will be taken at the door for the Arts Council.
